Large barrel-shaped drum with two hide heads stretched across the open ends of the wooden shell and held in tension with numerous wooden pegs. One head only is struck forcefully with a single, heavy stick beater to produce an explosive accent. The bedhug is suspended horizontally in an open-sided, box-like case. Not every gamelan is outfitted with a bedhug, but any bedhug can be used with any gamelan.
