gambang kayu

One of two gambang kayu of the gamelan pélog K.K. Kancilbelik.

A xylophone with between 20 and 22 wood bars that rest on top of the padded rim of a wooden box resonator. The bars are struck with a pair of long-handle padded-disc beaters, one held in each of the performer’s hands. The instrument produces a soft, staccato sound. One gambang kayu is found in each common practice sléndro gamelan, and either one or two in each common practice pélog gamelan.
