A large, horizontally-resting bronze gong with very deep turned-back rim and a raised central boss which is struck with a thinly-padded stick beater. Produces a penetrating and clear high-register pitch. Pre-modern common practice gamelans only have two kenong jaler, while modern gamelans typically have five (for gamelan sléndro) or six (for gamelan pélog) placed in box-like cases.
